Este domingo 27 de abril de 2008, en el marco del XX Aniversario de la Iglesia Luterana Costarricense (ILCO), Melvin Jiménez Marín se consagró como el primer obispo luterano del país, obedeciendo a la petición de las comunidades de fe luteranas, que han reclamado un pastor de pastores, y una voz orientadora en su iglesia, y hacia la sociedad.
La consagración contó con la participación de más de 300 invitados provenientes de las diferentes comunidades de fe, misiones y puntos de servicios alrededor del país; y de representantes de delegaciones y obispos luteranos de Suecia, Alemania y Estados Unidos, El Salvador y Nicaragua. Asimismo, a la actividad participaron los obispos anglicanos de El Salvador y de Costa Rica; y representantes de la Sociedad Civil, entre ellos, el ex candidato presidencial Rolando Araya, el ex presidente de la República, Rodrigo Carazo y el señor Allois Möler, del Servicio Luterano Mundial.

La ceremonia estuvo teñida de rojo, el color de las celebraciones solemnes y también de las fiestas cuando se recuerdan las y los mártires. Como un símbolo que implica llevar sobre sus hombros las cargas de la comunidad, y las responsabilidades y proyectos de la Iglesia, el líder espiritual se colocó una estola roja. Asimismo, el Obispo Jiménez recibió la mitra, una pieza que se colocó sobre su cabeza que simboliza la autoridad que sobresale en la iglesia. El báculo también se le entregó, que es una especie de bastón de madera que le da la potestad de conducir, guiar, iluminar el camino para que su iglesia siga y sea bien orientada.
Un pastor de pastores. Ordenado como presbítero en 1990, desde muy joven Melvin Jiménez fue líder de adolescentes y jóvenes, y ha entregado su vida a la educación ética y cristiana. Desde el año 2000 ha sido Pastor Presidente de la Iglesia Luterana Costarricense, a partir del año 2008, hasta el 2011 también tendrá a su cargo ser el Moderador de la Conferencia de Obispos y presidentes de las Iglesias Luteranas de América Latina miembros de la Federación Luterana Mundial
Profundizar la Misión Integral de la Iglesia Luterana será uno de los proyectos principales durante su gestión. Por eso, el obispo trabajará para que el quehacer de la ILCO se encarne en la realidad de los pobres y marginados de este país, para con ellos mejorar las condiciones de vida y construir la justicia.
Hacia una construcción de una iglesia sustentable, el primer obispo luterano de Costa Rica buscará ampliar la presencia en más de 30 comunidades alrededor del país, para beneficiar a más de las 5000 personas que se apoyan actualmente. Los proyectos para la defensa de los derechos humanos de las mujeres, los indígenas, las personas con VIH y Sida continuarán en la agenda, así como intensificación de nuevos programas para la niñez, juventud y adolescencia.

Lutheran Church of Costa Rica consecrates its first bishop
Under the framework of the 20th anniversary of the Lutheran Church of Costa Rica (ILCO), Melvin Jiménez Marín was consecrated as Costa Rica’s first Lutheran bishop on Sunday, April 27, 2008. His consecration followed the request of Lutheran communities of faith, who called a pastor of pastors and a voice within the church, aimed toward society.
The consecration included the participation of more than 300 invitees, including members of ILCO’s various communities of faith, mission points and points of service around the country, as well as Lutheran bishops and delegation representatives from Sweden, Germany, the United States, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Additionally, the event included Anglican bishops from El Salvador and Costa Rica and representatives of civil society, among them the ex-presidential candidate Rolando Araya, former Costa Rican president Rodrigo Carazo and Allois Moeler of Lutheran World Service.
The service was tinged with red, the color of solemn celebrations and celebrations when martyrs are remembered. A red stole was placed on the spiritual leader, a symbol that implies carrying the responsibilities of the community on his shoulders, and the responsibilities and projects of the church. Additionally, Bishop Jiménez received the mitre, a piece which was placed over his head to symbolize the authority projected from the church. The staff also was given to him, a type of wooden cane that gives him the power to direct, guide, and illuminate the path so that his church follows and is well-led.
A pastor of pastors. Ordained as a Lutheran pastor in 1990, Melvin Jiménez has since his youth been a leader of adolescents and youth, and has devoted his life to ethical and Christian education. Since 2000 he has been Pastor-president of the Lutheran Church of Costa Rica, and this year he began serving as Moderator of the Conference of Bishops and Presidents of the Lutheran World Federation member churches of Latin America – a position which he will hold until 2011.
Deepening the holistic mission of the Lutheran Church will be one of his principle projects during his leadership. Therefore, the bishop will work so that ILCO’s tasks and projects incarnate the reality of the poor and marginalized of Costa Rica, in order to improve living conditions and build justice together with them.
In working toward building a sustainable church, Costa Rica’s first Lutheran bishop hopes to extend its presence in more than 30 communities in the country, in order to benefit more than the 5,000 people currently supported by the church. Projects in the defense of human rights and of women, indigenous peoples and people with HIV/AIDS will stay on the agenda, with intensification of new programs for children, youth and adolescents.
